There is no better experience for a teacher than having a room full of people who are excited to be there. They aren’t doing it because they need credits, they’re doing it because they want to be in the room. Instructor Molly Cate feels similarly about OLLI’s student body, stating that she loves “teaching classes for OLLI because OLLI students take these classes on purpose. ![]() There’s a different take from people who have very different lived experiences and very different interfaces with art.” Teaching art to both Cal Poly Humboldt students and lifelong learners gives Julie a unique perspective, saying “When I teach OLLI, I teach all the same material that I do in my classes at Humboldt, and my favorite thing about teaching with OLLI is that the audience is completely different. This course will be offered online on March 23, but she is excited to get back in person soon. Julia Alderson, an Art History professor at Cal Poly Humboldt, will be teaching an OLLI class based on her semester-long university class: Spirituality in Contemporary Art. Janina Shayne is a longtime OLLI member and volunteers with the program as well. I’m really looking forward to meeting some new folks! I’ve been meeting up with the Let’s Connect group (a free weekly chat on zoom every Friday from 10 to 11 a.m.) and they’re just wonderful people.” I’m taking the class on How to Regulate Your Nervous System, Women Telling Their Stories Through Song which is going to be absolutely fabulous, and A Walk in the Redwoods. “I have three classes picked, even though I swore I would keep it two. OLLI member Ryan Stuart moved to Humboldt during the pandemic and has found a local community with the OLLI program she hopes to expand even further with these in-person course offerings. Members also brought donations to support Cal Poly Humboldt students, including bags of toiletries and non-perishable food items that students can pick up for free the Oh Snap! Food Pantry on campus. Three years later, OLLI is back with a mixed offering of online and in-person courses! Over 200 people visited the OLLI Open House on Saturday, February 11 to reconnect with fellow students, talk with instructors about the courses, and to register for new learning opportunities on the spot with OLLI staff members.
